What is Cochlear Implant Surgery?

Cochlear implant surgery is performed for children or adults with severe hearing loss due to inner ear damage that cannot be treated with hearing aids. Unlike hearing aids that amplify sound, a cochlear implant delivers sound signals by bypassing the damaged portion of the ear.
To understand and interpret the signals received from a cochlear implant both training and time is required. Most patients treated with cochlear implants make significant gains in understanding speech within the first year post treatment.
